On his inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” America's largest city, promising “a different age” and an ambitious start to his term.

A Historic Mayor

The new political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring advice to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for fear of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these initiatives may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Challenges

The new mayor will deal with concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing essential functions: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
