Joint British-French Airstrike Strikes Islamic State Munitions Store in the Syrian region
British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.
The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts leading to the site... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.
The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.
British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I want to thank all the members of British forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey said. "They were part of numerous UK service members on duty over the festive period. This mission, to take out militants who threaten our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."
In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. reports Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
