Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study reveals that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such drugs should be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Users who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," said a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural support.
