Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions added to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
